Matcha Shortage in Japan

In 2024, Japan faced an unexpected challenge: a shortage of high-quality matcha. With global demand at an all-time high and climate shifts impacting harvests in regions like Uji, even the most established tea farms felt the pressure ;(

Matcha isn’t mass-produced, it’s a craft. Our craft. And that craft is now under strain, with fewer hands to tend the fields and unpredictable weather disrupting the rhythm of each season.

At NIWA, we’re proud to be rooted in Uji, working directly with local farms to ensure our matcha stays pure, fresh, and true to tradition. Despite the industry-wide shortage, our close partnerships allow us to maintain consistent quality and fair pricing for our community.

Thank you for supporting authentic, sustainable matcha.
And thank you for your patience.. we’re sorry for the inconvenience.
